Which type do I need?
Three questions, sixty seconds.
Question 1 of 3
What the Heck
Is R-Value?
Think of R-value as your home’s insulation score. The higher the R-value, the better your insulation resists heat flow, helping keep warmth inside during the winter and outside during the summer. Simply put, a higher R-value means better insulating power, which can help your home stay more comfortable and energy efficient year-round.

Bar is R-value per inch, scaled against closed-cell at R-7.0.

| What it is | High-density expanding polyurethane that cures into a rock-solid, completely impermeable barrier. | Medium-density foam with breathable open cells that expands up to 100× to wrap around studs. | Loose fiberglass or cellulose blown pneumatically onto attic floors and hard-to-reach cavities. | Pre-cut fiberglass or rockwool rolls sized to sit between standard wood framing. |
| Best for | Crawl spaces, rim joists, where space is limited or moisture is a concern. | Walls, many attics, cost-effective air sealing. | Attic floors, topping up thin or settled insulation. | New construction walls, floors, vented attic assemblies. |

Local building codes across Benton and Washington counties recommend a minimum of R-38 for ceilings and R-13 for exterior walls.
Open-cell or
closed-cell?
Where it goes
By the numbers Open-cell
- R-value per inch R-3.8
- Density per cubic foot 0.5 lb
- Expansion off the gun 100×
- Moisture resistance Low
- Sound absorption Best
- Cost per board foot $$
This foam Closed-cell
Cheap depth, dead-quiet rooms and a full air seal, as long as the assembly is allowed to dry inward.
Everything you’d
want to ask.

It depends on the assembly. Attic floor, roof deck, wall cavity and crawl space each have a different right answer. Most Northwest Arkansas homes end up with a combination.
No. Foam wins on R-value per inch and air sealing. Where you have unlimited depth, a vented attic floor, blown-in gets the same performance for less.
Closed-cell is denser, rigid, roughly R-7.0 per inch and a vapour barrier at 2 inches. Open-cell is lighter, breathable, about R-3.8 per inch, better on sound and costs less.
Usually yes. Insulation slows heat. Sealing stops air. Batt and blown-in do not seal, so the leaks have to be handled separately. See what air sealing covers →
Benton and Washington county codes look for a minimum of R-38 at the ceiling and R-13 in exterior walls. We measure what is actually up there before quoting, most homes we open up are well under both.
