Cellulose or fiberglass?

Comparison Champ on R-value Grey-brown blown cellulose laid level across an attic floor between the trusses Cellulose R-3.2–3.8/inch Pink loose-fill fiberglass blown to depth across the same attic floor Fiberglass R-2.2–2.7/inch
What it is Recycled paper fibre, borate-treated, blown dense over the ceiling plane. Spun glass fibre, blown loose to depth. Lighter, and it does not settle.
Settles over time Some Minimal
Fire behaviour Borate-treated Non-combustible
Resists air movement Better Moderate
Blowing over existing Yes Yes
Best for Attic floors where depth is free and air movement is the problem. Attics that need topping up fast, and anywhere weight on the ceiling matters.

Swipe the table sideways

Local code across Benton and Washington counties looks for a minimum of R-38 at the ceiling. Most homes we open up are nowhere near it.

Questions about blown-in attic insulation

For R-38 you are looking at roughly 12–14 inches of blown cellulose, or more in fiberglass. We measure what is up there before quoting anything.

Usually yes. If the existing layer is dry and not contaminated, topping up is the cheapest way to reach depth. If it is wet, mouse-run or mould-stained, it comes out first.

No. The hose runs to the attic and the crew masks the route. We vacuum the path on the way out, the site is left the way we found it.

Most attics are done in half a day to a day, depending on square footage and access.
